Vidya Shyamsundar is a self-taught artist and a mural painter who paints colorful intricate patterns & motifs inspired by diverse cultural styles. Born and raised in India, she came to the United States 20 years ago; pursed a degree in Finance; and later worked in the business industry until she chose to become a stay at home mom. Her debut into the art world was truly a happy accident. She says, ” I would have never thought signing up for an art class as an avenue for distraction from chores would steer me into a world of possibilities that I am pursuing now.” Art making became a hobby, then became her passion, and now a relentless journey that she cherishes since 2015.

Vidya Shyamsundar’s inspiration to paint colorful intricate patterns & motifs came from her Indian heritage. She grew up in a joint family where the members followed every religious event and ritual with no fail.  Making a mandala every day by her mother was one of them.  She says, “I have always admired my mother’s ability to transform anything that she did with an artistic flair. It could be her drawing a mandala, sewing a dress, cooking a dish or keeping the home organized. Probably, these silent observations subconsciously got buried in my mind and came as an awakening call in my late thirties. Viola! I opened my Pandora box ! ”

Vidya Shyamsundar paints primarily in acrylic with occasional mixed media. Her subject matter ranges from mandalas, culture and diversity, landscapes, and Klimt inspired works. Vidya’s paintings can be found in local galleries, open studio tours, local art shows, and in her own home studio gallery in Downingtown, PA. She is mother of two young girls of ages 13 and 8 and enjoys organizing and decorating spaces outside of art making.
